feedback 2

Intro: This needs a lot of work but has the basic ingredients in there somewhere. You need much more clarity to your argument and you also need to mention secondary/historical texts. Avoid such definitive language (“You won’t ever see a woman…”) and there are also aspects that simply don’t make sense. You will need to seriously work on your academic writing if you want to reach the higher grades – read good quality examples of previous essays to develop your own writing style. 250 words.

Section 1: Background and wider context – feminism, gender roles, impact in society etc. Feminist and gender theory and research. Covering traditional stereotypes in order to show how TWD is different. 300 words.

Section 2: The Walking Dead and alternative representations of women. Detailed textual analysis. Refer back to previous feminist theory etc. Add more theory and examples where possible. 500 words.

Section 3: Secondary and historical texts. Discuss other examples of TV shows and whether they reinforce or challenge those traditional stereotypes. Make sure you are getting textual analysis, media theory and quotes into this section. You can mention Tomb Raider (a film text) but don’t make it a major part of the essay. 400 words.

Section 4: Wider context in society – media effects theory. What impact do these negative/positive representation of women have on audiences? You might also want to write about modern feminism online – Twitter accounts and blogs, Everyday Sexism etc. This could be brought into the wider context debate OR saved for the next section. 400 words.

Section 5: The future of feminism… is The Walking Dead an example of how female characters will be represented in future or are traditional stereotypes still dominant? Where will this debate go in the next 5-10 years? 250 words.

Conclusion: Sum up your argument and try and return to your introduction and use a similar structure/style. 150 words.

Next steps… update/finish your plan based on this tutorial. You don’t need to stick to the above by any means but hopefully it has at least clarified your thinking and provided a potential structure that will be easy to follow.

Think carefully about your academic writing – you NEED to read some examples of high quality essays and develop your own formal academic writing style.

Publish this tutorial to your blog with your next steps as usual.

intro

In this essay i will be writing and supporting my question " To what extent does the representation of women in The Walking Dead challenge traditional gender stereotypes?". My essay is about the famous TV show The walking dead that airs every Monday at 9pm on FOX TV. The walking dead is about a zombie apocalypse that is happening in America. Its focused on a group of survivors that have to go through obstacles to stay safe. There are men and women involved and they need to fight and stay safe. The women in this show are shown as strong women who are defending themselves everyday from evil people and the zombies. The men are also taking care of themselves. Women aren’t associated with fighting or have anything to do with it. They normally associate fighting and grim things with men as that’s what they are supposed to do. They will be used to seeing it and being aggressive which is why its ok. Women in the walking dead aren’t like this and they can handle seeing blood and gore, they can handle getting a few bruises or getting a wound. This is different for people to understand as still to this day they will still not let women do a certain job because “it’s a man’s job” or won’t let women play the strong female character as much in films. This does still happen. Mist films nowadays and TV shows do let women be that character but they still have that slightly traditional role of being a sex object and damsel in distress in between. You won’t ever see a woman just play a normal aggressive, masculine role as they think they can’t do it or that it will upset other females because they are shown to that extent. Some females are still rational themselves they believe that they should be housewives or only stay in the kitchen and be known for it. When women are showing masculine traits it’s a shock but a good one. This is because it can empower other women and be a role model for them.

historical

How is it similar/different to your main text?

This is short video telling me about what life was like in the 50s for women. The women of that time were there to provide for their families, look after the children and thats all. They finished high school and then were off to get married later. The men were there to make money, go college and make soemthing of themselves. The women in  that time who didnt agree and wanted to do better they would  be called "crazy". This is bad as they would want to go out and find a good job and not be atypical hosuewife but as the society was made in that way they had to do this as thats what the society told them to do. In 00s it had become a bit more better as women were allowed to work and not be  stay at home mum or wife. The men had more to do with this and some would stay at home or work part time. However women are still not getting treated the same in the terms of work. They are still getting paid less than men eventhough they work the same hours etc.

  • How does this show how the genre/society/issue has changed?

  • This has told me different things as women arent getting treated the same as much but still are in a way. thewre will always be a few things that women will always be behind in a way. Women will always be based around that role taht they have to be a houswife etc. For example, in some films women are being shown the damsel in distress as people think they cant do their usual roles and be whatever they want. This  is bad as they need to make sure that they are treated the same and not as second class. This has always been a problem and will be until women get paid teh same. This is when feminism comes in and alot of feminsts believe in these sorts of things.

  • How is it similar/different to your main text?

  • As this is one of my texts that i am comparing the walking dead women to, i wanted to analyse this. This film was done in the early 00s. This is differnet to the walking dead as it doesnt include zombies or anything sci-fi as such but it relates to the walking dead as Lara croft the main woman in the show has shown how strong and indepednant she is She is seen here defending herself and trying to get soemthing back that belong to her mother. As  you can tell she is playing the good character whereas the guy is being the villain. He is beating her up and wants to kill her but shes defending herslef and keep sgetting uo even when shes badly hurt. This shows how strong women can be in the film indusrty.

  • How does this show how the genre/society/issue has changed?

  • The culture and traditional views have changed as she doesnt play the damsel in distress she plays the good character whose strong and can fight. Th emain part is that she can fight and she can defend herself. Many women in those days wouldnt even think about fighting or trying to defend themselves. Men arent supposed to abuse women and in this a man is. This is also showing how times have chaanged as they are showing this and how they are showing that she wins shows that women can do that. As men are more physical and are more aggressive you would assume that he wins the fight and kills her but as shes strong she wins. This does go against what supposed to be good and bad in society.

    Plan

    Intro- (200 word)
I will be  introducing and telling what i will be doing, what the work that i was set to do and what the task is and what i am going to be doing in the end. This is to make sure that the examiner has a insight of what they are expecting and how i will be doing it. I need to ensure that i don't just go starlight into it as it doest feel right and it doesn't make sense to do that.

para 1- what females have been like over the years (400)
In this  paragraph i will be talking about what feminism is and how its been affecting many females and some males over the years and what has changed about it. I will the discuss about gender and what traditional roles are and how they have changed over the years.I want to be able to tell them a story of what's been a tradition, what still is a tradition and what isn't a tradition any more. This is to make them understand how much has changed around the world.Linking quotes to this

    • What are gender roles?
Gender roles are the way people act, what they do and say, to express being a girl or a boy, a woman or a man. These characteristics are shaped by society. Gender roles vary greatly from one culture to the next, from one ethnic group to the next, and from one social class to another. But every culture has gender roles — they all have expectations for the way women and men, girls and boys, should dress, behave, and look.
Children learn gender roles from an early age — from their parents and family, their religion, and their culture, as well as the outside world, including television, magazines, and other media. As children grow, they adopt behaviours that are rewarded by love and praise. They stop or hide behaviours that are ridiculed, shamed, or punished. This happens early in life. By age three, children have usually learned to prefer toys and clothes that are “appropriate” to their gender.

para 2-talk about and mention some shows that support being traditional and not.(300)
There have been some parts where there haven't been enough said and that there hasn't been enough said about these and that's why i am going to be talking about it and making sure that i mention enough. There has been some change around the world when it comes to tradition and gender roles but in the film and TV industry it has also changed as whatever goes on around the world doesn't always get shown in the films and TV shows that are being shown. This will be a argument that i will make and back up in both ways.I will add quotes that link to this.

    • In developing nations where school attendance is not so highly regulated as it is in westernized countries, young girls account for 60 percent of the out-of-school population of children. This is due to the emphasis that many parents in developing nations place on the welfare of their sons. The young man is looked at as an asset in the family. The young woman is a supporter, someone who can stay home and help with household tasks while the men earn income and develop their education.Girls are bought and sold as young brides without any consent on their own part. The rightful property of their father or brother, there are many girls who are left to the bidding of the family members with no protectors or supporters who have their best interests at heart. In China, girls are given up for adoption at a rate much higher than men as families prefer to raise a son over a daughter in a highly regulated nation where they are limited to only one child.

para 3- Talk about the walking dead -how the women are shown (300)
In this paragraph i will be explaining how this links to my critical investigation and talk about the walking dead all this time. This is because this is what i am talking about and i need to make points by doing a two side view on things. I need to ensure that there isn't anything that i leave behind and make sure that i include it all as i need to talk about how women are seen as strong then not strong in the walking dead. How gender roles have changed for both males and females in the walking dead. i need to make sure that i make both points so that im not contradicting myself i will need to add quotes and links into this that backs it up.

para 4- talk about sarah connor and make links (400)
In this paragraph i will be talking about one other text that links with what i am talking about. As i am talking about how strong women are being represented in TV. I will show strong women in other TV shows like in the Sarah Connor chronicle. I want to show that there are strong women in other genres of TV like sci-fi which is where this text fits into. I will link it and add quotes.

Para 5- Mention anything else that i think is important (200)
I will keep talking about Sarah Connor and how it links to the walking dead and make comparisons and changes. I will then say what the unique things are and how they have changed over time and what hasn't changed.I will add quotes and links.

Para 6- use my text of tomb raider and use qoutes and link it to TWD (200)
I will introduce my other text which is Lara Croft-Tomb raider.I will talk about the film was about and how it supports my question. This is a good film that included many things. As this is a film i can still add information into it and make sure that its important info that i will use.I will add information and quotes to this so that it backs it up more.

    • http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/aug/05/lara-croft-bayonetta-female-games Lara Croft is perhaps the most famous woman in gaming. Since the original Tomb Raider arrived in 1996, the character has attracted criticism for her physical appearance – so when the most recent release in the series gave her a realistically proportioned body, the new Lara was praised as a more relatable hero. Removing the over-sized breasts and teeny, tiny waist is apparently all that was needed for the character to evolve from sex object to admirable “survivor”.

Para 7- Mention anything else important  and add quotes about traditional and non traditional roles.
I will talk about anything else that i think that i have left out and make sure that i include it well.I will make sure that i add all the quotes and links that i can and analyse it properly.I will also mention the benefits and drawback of the walking dead women and how they are strong and show different stereotypes but then also talk about how they go back to their traditional roles.

Female toughies infiltrated the otherwise masculine domains of The Matrix, Prometheus, Captain America: The First Avenger and Avengers Assemble. The Snow White of Snow White and the Huntsman turned out to be an adept killer. Not even children's animations have escaped the vogue: in Shrek, the princess knew kung fu; in Brave, she was a warrior.
By fairly common consent, the godmother of the bunch rose out of the pitiless crucible of 1970s blaxploitation. Today, Pam Grier is remembered mainly as Tarantino's Jackie Brown, but it was forgotten films such as Coffy, Friday Foster and Sheba, Baby that made her "the biggest, baddest and most beautiful of all female heroes in popular culture", according to Rikke Schubart, the author of Super Bitches and Action Babes.

Grier's characters gleefully punched, kicked and shot men, kicked them in the testicles, and stabbed them with hairpins, broken bottles and metal hangers. Meanwhile, Asian cinema was already awash with viragos who did not go unnoticed elsewhere. Then, in 1979, Alien brought the dauntless action woman into the mainstream.

    Conclusion-
I will then make a conclusion after all words are completed and conclude it nicely with what i have said and making more valid points then i will make sure that there is some information about the work i will be doing and i will also mention what my production will be about and how it links to the walking dead and how i will support my question that i will be answering.
